Prepare your vehicle
Complete necessary repairs and resolve open safety recalls before inspection. Have your DMV paperwork and repair records ready; bring the documents the station requests.
Have the vehicle inspected
A licensed VSSI station checks brakes, lights and other required safety systems. The inspection also includes applicable diagnostic checks, a recall check and a road test.
Review your results
Keep your Vehicle Safety Report. If the vehicle passes, the station sends the electronic VSSI certificate to DMV. If it fails, correct the listed issues before a complete reinspection of all required safety systems—not just the repaired areas.
Finish registration with DMV
Complete the remaining DMV registration requirements, including ownership paperwork, vehicle verification and fees as applicable. A separate Smog Check may also be required. VSSI and Smog Check are different inspections; passing VSSI does not complete registration.
